3 Days Nyiragongo Volcano Hiking safari is one of the outstanding safaris that will take you to have the encounter with the wonderful active volcano and beautiful sceneries of Democratic Republic of Congo.
Nyiragongo is part of the 8 Virunga Volcanoes, which are found in Uganda, Rwanda and then DR Congo. Mount Nyiragongo is an active volcano that last erupted in 2002 which took people’s lives and destroyed properties.
This safari offers you the opportunity to experience the beauty with perfect views of the same in the night when darkness covers the area.
Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Gisenyi.
On the first day of the safari, your safari guide from Focus East Africa Tours will pick you up from your hotel in Kigali or from Kigali International Airport and brief you about the safari. After briefing you will start your journey from Kigali to Gisenyi on the shores of Lake Kivu for an overnight stay.
Day 2: Transfer to Nyiragongo Volcano Hike.
On this day you start your journey to Nyiragongo volcano hike. Early in the morning, after breakfast, you will be at the Grande Barriere border crossing at 7:00am and you will check in Virunga tourism office by 8:00am of the scheduled trek. When you check in you will be provided with a volcano trek permit and transfer to the starting point of the hike.
On arrival at Kibata ranger post, you will start the hike up Nyiragongo at around 10:00am. The hike takes about 6 hours depending on your fitness and speed that is 6 hours can be less or more. During the hiking, you will pass through the forested areas, lava flows and many others.
You will have the chance to enjoy wonderful views of the boiling lava with red glow from the crusted lava and can have everlasting hiking safari memories. You will enjoy your dinner, relaxation and overnight stay at the crater.
Day 3: descend from Nyiragongo and transfer to Kigali.
Get up and then enjoy breakfast and after descend back and be transferred back to Grande Barriere. Your driver will pick you and transfer you back to Kigali with an en-route lunch that will bring your safari to the end.
