The 5 days Congo Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking safari takes you through the Democratic Republic of Congo and offers you a chance of a rare double encounter with the world’s most impressive great apes. This expedition takes you deep into the ancient Mahura Forest for an intimate chimpanzee trekking experience, where you can observe our closest biological relatives.
The adventure reaches its peak with two dedicated days of gorilla trekking in the UNESCO listed Virunga National Park, providing the unique opportunity to visit different habituated mountain gorilla families, this safari promised an immersive, once-in-a-lifetime connection with these majestic, endangered giants in Africa’s oldest protected wilderness.
Day 1: Transfer to Virunga National Park-Goma.
On the first day of the safari, your safari guide from Focus East Africa Tours will pick you up from Kigali International Airport or from your hotel in Kigali. He will brief you about the safari, after which you will proceed with your journey with an en-route lunch.
Proceed on your journey, and then upon your arrival, you will visit the Virunga offices to pick up your Gorilla and chimpanzee permits, which must be presented at the start of each trek. After completing the check-in, you will be transferred to Mikeno camp for relaxation and an overnight stay.
Day 2: Mountain gorilla trekking.
After an early morning breakfast, you will be transferred to the park headquarters for a briefing about the rules and regulations for gorilla trekking. After the briefing, together with your ranger guide, you will start the hike in the jungle searching for the mountain gorillas.
And once the gorillas are spotted and found, you will spend one hour with these gentle giants after locating them. After the one hour, you will move back to the headquarters and be offered the certificate for participating in gorilla trekking and later proceed to the camp for lunch, later relax at the lodge then dinner, and overnight stay.
Day 3: Another gorilla trekking.
Today you will enjoy another gorilla trekking in a different part of the park with the same procedures as on day two. And then the overnight stay will be at a different lodge and then you will return to Mikeno the next day.
Day 4: Chimpanzee trekking and visit to the Gorilla Orphanage.
After breakfast, like how the gorilla trekking is done, chimpanzee trekking also starts early in the morning. You will be given one hour to be in the presence of the chimps when you find them. And then later you will visit the gorilla orphanage and then after a long day you will transfer back to the Mikeno lodge.
Day 5: Transfer to Kigali.
After a hearty breakfast. You will check out from your lodge and then meet your safari guide and then transfer to Kigali with the en-route lunch along the way. And once you arrive in Kigali, you will be transferred to your hotel in Kigali or to Kigali International Airport, which will bring your safari to the end.
