Attractions in Kitulo National Park
Recently rated Africa’s top destination site, Kitulo National Park is situated in the southern part of Tanzania, located high up in the mountains just between the Njombe and Mbeya regions.
Years ago, the Kitulo land was kept in its natural state, and in 2005, the government of Tanzania declared Kitulo a national park because it has unique species of over 350 species of flowers, including 45 species of orchids.
Kitulo is known to humans as “The Garden of God” because of its divinity and peacefulness, especially when all of its flowers are blooming. It is around 2,600 meters above sea level in elevation and is the only park in Africa that was largely formed to save plants rather than animals. It is not a big game park but more of nature’s moods, which are subdued and colorful.
Beautiful flowers everywhere
Kitulo National Park is a fairyland when it comes to flowers. It is a world of colors during the period from November to April. The rain in these months helps hundreds of different types of flowers bloom everywhere in the grasslands.
Certain flowers are small in height and grow near the ground, while there are flowers that grow tall and swish about in the wind. The most common flowers found there are orchids and lilies, and there are many colors: yellow, pink, purple, and white, to mention a few. It’s like nature is celebrating with colors all around.
People come from distant places just to walk among the flowers and click pictures. It’s peaceful, it’s crisp, and it smells divine. Apart from flowers, butterflies are flying around, resting on the petals so softly, making everything even more beautiful.
The park is not just a holiday destination; it’s also a great botanical science research site. You’re less likely to find this wonderful collection of flowers anywhere else in the world because they’re mostly found in Kitulo National Park.
Cool walking trails
Kitulo National Park offers many walking trails that you can utilize. These include hill trails, forest trails, and valley trails. They range from short and simple ones that are perfect for a leisurely walk to long and challenging ones that are great for hiking to exploring more of the park.
You enjoy fresh mountain air and the song of birds in the background while walking. The walk is cushy and grassy, and the air is fresh and cool, so walking is pure bliss.
You can sit and take photos wherever you want or just enjoy the tranquility of being outdoors. If you love nature or need a break from urban enclosures, the park is your ideal haven.

Waterfalls and rivers
You will find features like waterfalls and rivers specific to the region. The nearer you are to a waterfall, the more intense the sound of water running over rocks and small bodies of water. It is not so loud but soothing to the ears, with a chance of being therapeutic to the people.
The rivers also flow gently over valleys and grasslands. The water itself is very clean and fresh, and occasionally, you happen to catch sight of some small insects or fish in the water. The atmosphere surrounding such water bodies is also cool and fresh. Some people decide to visit just to either sit by the river or the waterfalls and silently enjoy nature.
There are some excellent spots to take some photos or simply sit, think, and relax your mind. If you visit early in the morning, everything is quiet and magical and close to being otherworldly. Observing the sun through water droplets is a very comparable experience to seeing tiny rainbows. Kitulo waterfalls are not as large and well-known as Victoria Falls, but they possess a tranquil type of beauty that is difficult not to be drawn to.
Rare birds.
Another wonderful thing about Kitulo is the number of birds that you can see there. Most of the birds there are hard to come by elsewhere. Photographers and birdwatchers visit Kitulo alone to catch a glimpse of these unique birds in their natural environments. One such unique bird is the blue swallow, a tiny, fast, and shiny blue.
Among the less familiar birds is the Denham’s bustard, a big bird that slowly bulldozes its way through the grass. Some types of birds have lovely, brightly colored feathers, and others possess a lovely voice with which to sing.
Even those who are not bird watchers will enjoy trying to spot different birds and listen to their songs. Birds fill the morning and early evening air with songs when they chirp and pursue insects.

Other nests hide behind trees or bushes, and you get to see parents bring food to baby birds. Being here offers a chance for you to see just how beautiful and clever birds are. It is not about watching it, but rather seeing how stunning and lovely this peaceful aspect of life is.
Livingstone forest
Kitulo National Park is unlike the open savannah grasslands, as it is mainly covered by the Livingstone Forest. It gives a feeling of stepping into a hidden jungle. It has tall, broad-leaved trees that shade you in all directions, and the leaves from the trees and soft vegetation cover the ground. The forest has a cooler climate due to the environmental features of the forest.
You can see the monkeys swinging from tree to tree as you walk in the forest. They are nice and playful and in sight in front of you if you creep along. Some bugs and birds live in this forest by themselves. The sun shines through the leaves in little patches, and it’s like magic.
Nature lovers like to visit because it is far off the grid and peaceful. The herbs and flowers in the forest are of medicinal value. Scientists from around the world come to Kitulo for research on these plants and make new medicine. It is such a strange and unexpected place.
