Lake Nakuru national park is a Kenya birding haven hosting over 450 bird species including the large herds of greater and lesser flamingoes found along the shores of Lake Nakuru found in the park, Lake Nakuru is an alkaline – soda lake found in the lake system of the Great Rift Valley of Eastern Africa, the lake has an area surface of 5 to 45 square kilometers with an average depth of 0.30 meters. Lake Nakuru is the main birding spot in Lake Nakuru national park, the lake catchment is bounded by Menengai crater to the north, the Bahati Hills to the northeast, the Lion Hill ranges to the East, Eburu crater to the south and the Mau Escarpment to west.

 Birds in Lake Nakuru national park include 5 globally threatened species namely Madagascar Pond Heron, Lesser flamingo, Pallid Harrier, Greater Spotted Eagle. The park also hosts over 1,496,000 water birds together with large concentrations of greater flamingoes which are seen on the shores of the lake creating a pink plumage.
