The lake is famous as the location of the great bird spectacle on earth-myriads of the fuchsia pink flamingos whose numbers are legion, often more than a million, or even two million, they feed on the abundant algae, which thrives in the warm waters. Scientists reckon that the flamingo population at Nakuru consumes about 250,000 kilograms of algae per hectare of the surface area per year.

Most big safari animals are present in Lake Nakuru national park with the exception of Elephants. The Park is well known for its populations of the 150 rhinos with 20% black and 80% white rhino. The White rhino is particularly conspicuous, and different groups can be encountered throughout the day. Thus the Hippo, waterbuck, Burchell’s zebra and the Thomson’s gazelle are common on the flood plains.

Lake Nakuru National park is an important strongholds for the rare Rothschild’ giraffe, it was introduced to the park in the 1980’s and has now become locally common.
