Mathews Range Attraction Kenya : Laikipia and Kenya’s northern border are separated by the beautiful Mathews mountain range. 150 km across, far away and undeveloped. It’s a completely wild place. For those who are fortunate enough to go on a safari, the Mathews mountain range is a quiet retreat. While local Samburu people can be found leading hikes through river valleys and across streams in the forest.

Around the region, the animals are wary. But if you’re fortunate, seeing an elephant may be quite satisfying. The forest is teeming with life, and birders in particular can be rewarded with sightings of rare Narina Trogons and Turacos.

The accommodations in the Mathews Range are sparse but exquisite. Mobile safaris, on the other hand, can be organised nearby and let visitors travel farther and farther into the forest.

Highlights.

 Walking Safaris and Trails.

There is not much of a road network through the forest. The walking paths are the main attraction in the Matthews Range. In order to allow people to hike and thoroughly explore the area, numerous pathways have been thoughtfully cut through the forest. You can customize a walking safari to match your fitness needs.

Fauna and Flora.

The Matthews forest, dubbed a “biological bonanza” by the BBC, is a haven for a broad variety of species from many different ecosystems. The dense forests are home to a variety of wild creatures, including the endangered African wild dog, the Melanistic leopard, elephant, lion, buffalo, Colobus monkey, larger kudu, waterbuck, huge forest hogs, and Grevy’s zebra. More than 200 different bird and butterfly species can be seen in the area. That can be sighted on a Kenya safari in the Matthew ranges.

Rock Pools.

A number of crystal-clear streams are gently meandering through the forest. Rock ponds have developed in places that are deeper. While taking a stroll through the forest, the water is so inviting to dip your toes in. Even if the water is clean, diving into one of the rock pools will definitely make you feel more giddy than usual. Among the things that visitors take pleasure in are swimming, bathing on the rocks, and tarzaning into the pools using the ropes.

Quad Biking.

A fun way to discover the forest. Get on a quad bike and ride around the forest on four wheels while being guided by a licensed instructor.

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary.

In order to safeguard elephants in Northern Kenya, a community formed the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. The sanctuary offers these traumatised elephants care and compassion as it is home to orphaned elephants. Reteti Elephant Sanctuary works in the same manner as the less well-known David Sheldrick Orphanage in Kenya, with the same goal of eventually releasing the animals back into the wild.

Singing Wells.

The name Singing Wells is derived from a lovely and personal Samburu tradition. The Samburu tribe‘s young men congregate around deep wells that have been dug into the barren river bed as the sun rises during the dry season. The warriors start singing as they dig for water, synchronizing their teamwork with the beat. Their livestock start to emerge from the bushes as the songs start. Animals are invited to come and satisfy their thirst by the singing.
