Attractions of Kundelungu National Park
The mighty Lofoi falls.
The absolute star of Kundelungu National Park is the Lofoi Falls. Standing at a staggering height of approximately 340 to 384 meters (depending on the measurement), it is often celebrated as one of the highest waterfalls in Africa and the highest in the central Africa. Unlike many other waterfalls that tumble over several steps, the Lofoi falls has a massive, single unbroken drop that plunges into a deep, misty gorge below. The sight of the water cascading from the high plateau is truly humbling and is the main reason many adventurers make the journey to this remote corner of the DRC.
To see the falls at their most powerful, many visitors prefer the transition between the rainy and dry seasons. However, even in the dry season, the sight is spectacular because the clear air allows for better photography and a shaper view of the surrounding cliffs. The falls are a tributary of the Lufira River, and the surrounding greenery, fed by the constant mist, creates a micro environment where rare plants and flowers are found, standing at a viewpoint, watching the water turn into a white veil against the red brown rocks, is an experience you will never forget.
Lutshipuka and Masansa falls.
While Lofoi is the most famous, Kundelungu is actually home to three major waterfalls, each with its own personality. Lutshipuka falls and Masansa Falls offer amore quiet experience compared to the grand Lofoi. Lutshipuka is particularly popular because it has a natural pool at its base where the water is calm enough for swimming.
After a long day of hiking through the park, you can experience and then enjoy diving into the cool, clear mountain water while surrounded by the sounds of the African bush. It feels like your own private spa in the middle of the wilderness.
Musansa falls, is known for its beautiful scenery and the way the water flows over the rock formations. These smaller falls are perfect for travelers who want to escape the main tourist paths and enjoy a picnic.
The trails connecting these waterfalls allow you to see the diversity of the park, moving from the open grasslands of the plateau to the thick, green forests that grow near the water sources. Exploring these ‘’hidden’’ falls gives you a complete picture of the park’s water system and provides many opportunities to spot smaller wildlife and rare insects along the riverbanks.
Wildlife.
Kundelungu national park is a paradise for tourists who enjoy spotting animals in their natural habitat. The park’s landscape is a mix of Miombo woodlands, high altitude steppes, and savannah grasslands. This a variety of habitats supports a wide range of animals, including several types of antelopes like the beautiful sable antelope, the large kudu, and the Katanga impala. You might also see herds of buffalo, warthogs, and families of monkeys playing in the forest canopies. While big cats like lions and cheetahs are present in the park, the are quite shy and rare to see, which makes a sighting feel like a true reward for the patient travaelers.

Best time to visit.
The weather plays a big role in your experience at Kundelungu. The park has a tropical climate with a long dry season and a rainy season.
The dry season (May to September): this is generally the best time to visit. During these months, the roads are dry and much easier to move through with a 4×4 vehicle. Because the grass is shorter, it is also much easier to spot wildlife grazing on the plains. The weather is cooler and more comfortable for hiking, though the nights on the plateau can get quite chilly.
The wet season (October to April); This is the time for the ‘’green’’ scenery and powerful waterfalls. While the rains make some roads muddy and difficult to travel, the landscape becomes incredibly lush and vibrant. If your main goal is to see the waterfalls at their dramatic and you do not mind a bit of mud, this season can be very rewarding.
