Mount Sabyinyo makes up of the recognized Virunga Mountains a series of eight volcanoes that are shared between three countries of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The endangered mountain gorillas and elusive golden monkeys call some of these mountain slopes home. The name “Sabyinyo,” which translates loosely to “Old man’s teeth” in the local Kinyarwanda / Kifumbira language, comes from the rugged gap-like appearance of the volcano, which is the oldest of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga massif.

One of the most remarkable landmarks in the area is this extinct volcano, which rises to a height of 3,669 metres. The three nations’ international borders meet at its summit, where you can simultaneously view them all. There are hints from some locals that it has magical abilities. Because of its advantageous location and the breathtaking views it offers from its summit, it is one of the best mountains in the Virunga region to hike up.

Reaching the summit of Mount Sabyinyo is an adventure that can be completed in as little as 7-8 hours of time. It’s the least popular walk in the area, despite the fact that it may appear to take only a few hours. This is because climbing it is extremely risky and nearly impossible due to the mountain’s rough terrain, ridges, and crater pits. As a result, the only way to reach Mount Sabyinyo is through the Ugandan portion, where attempts are being made to install rails to help hikers and where slopes are passable.

Although hiking is challenging, the rewards are unparalleled, even with the 360-degree views of the three neighboring countries a unique and rare geographical phenomenon. On fortunate days, hikers may also be fortunate enough to spot mountain gorillas and the elusive golden monkeys, two endangered species.

After a briefing from knowledgeable guides, the trek starts at the Mgahinga National Park head offices in Ntebeko. This usually includes a brief history of Sabyinyo Mountain, an outline of what to expect on the trail, and safety tips to ensure your safety while hiking this challenging volcano. There are three peaks on the mountain, and the higher you go, the more difficult the walk becomes but also the more rewarding the views are.

Due to the challenging nature of this mountain, it is not advised for those with health problems or inexperienced climbers. It becomes difficult, and if you only reach the first peak, your goal of reaching Sabyinyo’s highest peak will remain unfulfilled.
